Pinworms in Ontario

Pinworm infections are a common type of intestinal parasite that affect many children and adults across Ontario each year. So how do you get pinworms? Pinworms, also known as Enterobius vermicularis, are caused by tiny, white, thread-like worms that live in the intestines. Infection usually occurs when pinworm eggs are accidentally ingested, often through contaminated hands, surfaces, bedding, or clothing. As an Ontario-licensed pharmacist, I frequently speak with patients and parents about pinworm infections and can provide important information about prevention and treatment options available in Ontario.

Symptoms of Pinworms

The most common symptoms of pinworm infection include:

  • Intense itching around the anus, especially at night

  • Irritability or difficulty sleeping due to itching

  • Abdominal discomfort or mild stomach pain

  • Nausea in some cases

  • Visible tiny white worms in stool or around the anal area

Symptoms are often more noticeable at night when female worms lay eggs, causing itching that can lead to secondary scratching and irritation.

Preventing Pinworm Infections

There are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of pinworm infections:

  • Practice good hand hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before eating.

  • Keep fingernails short and clean: This helps prevent eggs from collecting under nails.

  • Clean household surfaces: Regularly wash bedding, clothing, and toys in hot water to kill any eggs.

  • Shower daily: Encourage children to bathe or shower in the morning to remove eggs laid overnight.

  • Avoid scratching: Scratching the anal area can spread eggs to other surfaces and people.

Treatment of Pinworms in Ontario

If you or your child develop a pinworm infection, it’s important to seek treatment promptly to prevent re-infection and the spread to others. If you suspect pinworms, you can contact a pharmacist through RxToday.ca to speak with a pharmacist for a virtual assessment in Ontario.

A pharmacist may recommend or prescribe over-the-counter or prescription anti-parasitic medications, such as mebendazole or albendazole, which are commonly used in Ontario to treat pinworm infections. It is often recommended that all household members be treated at the same time to prevent reinfection. Your pharmacist can also provide guidance on hygiene practices to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Always remember: Follow the full course of medication exactly as prescribed. Proper hygiene and household cleaning are essential to prevent reinfection. If symptoms persist or worsen after treatment, seek further medical evaluation.
